Criminal Cases in the Henderson County Courts
One elected Clerk of Superior Court keeps the criminal case records for both court divisions in Henderson County. District Court handles misdemeanors and infractions without a jury. A felony usually starts there for its first appearance and early proceedings. Some less serious felonies may end with a guilty plea in District Court, but felony trials and serious felony dispositions belong in Superior Court. A District Court misdemeanor conviction can also be appealed for a new trial, called a de novo trial, in Superior Court.

Henderson County Cases Enter Odyssey
Henderson County joined North Carolina's Enterprise Justice system on July 22, 2024, during eCourts Track 5. The change moved local case indexing, calendars, and public Portal access into Odyssey. Newer events can appear in a near-real-time Case Summary or Register of Actions, yet the conversion did not turn every source document into a public download. Older paper material and documents withheld from Portal still require clerk help.

How to Search Case Records
Use the North Carolina eCourts Portal for public case information, but finish at the Henderson County clerk when a source document or certified result is needed. Namesakes are common. Henderson County Smart Search Syntax
Odyssey case numbers use a two-digit year, a letter case type, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. A documented example is 21CR000003-910. For a partial case number, enter at least four characters followed by an asterisk. A wildcard name search needs at least three letters of the surname plus an asterisk and at least one letter of the given name plus an asterisk. Broad name searches work best in last, first order.

NC Judgment Search can then check judgment information by party, case, location, status, and judgment date instead of repeating the same broad Smart Search.
What the Case File Shows
A Portal result is a case-centered summary. The clerk's full Henderson County criminal file can contain the instruments and orders behind that summary. Read the disposition, not just the original charge. Charges may change through amendment, dismissal, plea, or trial, and the final judgment controls the recorded outcome.

Henderson County Clerk Record Tiers
The courthouse terminal searches criminal cases by defendant name, case number, or victim and witness name. Inspection is free. Staff can retrieve a paper or electronic file held in Henderson County, and copies are available for a fee. Stages of a Criminal Case

Henderson County Felony Case Paths
A felony's appearance in District Court does not make it a misdemeanor. District Court conducts the opening stages, including first appearance and probable-cause or other pretrial work. Superior Court receives felony trials and serious felony pleas or dispositions. A less serious felony can sometimes resolve by plea in District Court under North Carolina procedure, which is why the division name alone cannot identify the final offense level.
The reverse path also occurs after a District Court misdemeanor conviction. An appeal produces a new Superior Court trial rather than a narrow review of a recorded District Court transcript. This de novo structure means one Henderson County matter can leave entries in both divisions. Read the case number, charge, disposition, and judgment together before drawing a conclusion.

Henderson County Court Access Changes
Henderson County is rebuilding its Grove Street justice campus through the Judicial Center Addition and Renovation project. Commissioners approved a 94,315-square-foot courthouse addition and renovation of about 99,100 square feet in May 2024. In March 2026 they authorized a $100 million courthouse-annex construction phase. Earlier studies identified fragmented offices and conflicts between prisoner movement and public paths. The project is a local milestone in the shift from paper-centered counters to a larger court campus supported by Odyssey.
Construction can change entrances, screening, parking, and the path to the clerk counter even when records remain available. Check the official courthouse page before an in-person search and allow time for security. The underlying custody rule does not shift with the building work: the clerk keeps court case records, while the sheriff keeps incident, arrest, booking, and detention records.
Access & Restrictions
North Carolina law opens clerk records for inspection under G.S. 7A-109, subject to other law and court orders. That does not expose sealed or expunged files, juvenile matters, confidential victim data, medical details, protected identifiers, or sensitive source documents. Portal also masks public birth dates and does not publish every document found in the clerk's file.
When a Henderson County case is missing online, ask whether the clerk can locate a public paper or electronic file. If access is denied, request the specific legal basis and ask whether nonexempt portions can be separated.
